Biography
Thrice is an anomaly; a sublime conglomeration of kick-ass, blood-pumping music, combined with the lyrical phrasing of a literary wordsmith. Their powerful, driving beats and buzz-saw riffs will literally leave you covered with goose bumps, and their melodic hooks and pensive lyrics will dare you to look inward.
This four-piece from Irvine, California began playing together just under three-years ago. From the beginning, the band managed to wrangle a very strong grass-roots fan base that continues to grow exponentially.
After putting out a self released E.P., "First Impressions," three months after forming, they began playing throughout Southern California, and continued writing new material. A year later, they recorded their first full-length album, which was originally released on Green Flag Records, a small independent label based in Tustin, CA.
The album, titled "Identity Crisis," was re-released in March of 2001, on Sub City Records, an offshoot of Hopeless Records that donates 5% of all retail sales to charity. Thrice chose to benefit Crittenton Services for Children and Families in Fullerton, CA, with the proceeds from the record. "Identity Crisis" was welcomed with rave reviews from fans, websites and fanzines, and before long, the band found themselves touring the U.S., coast to coast, with the likes of AFI, Hot Water Music, Cave In and The Alkaline Trio. At home their hard work also started to payoff and they began to headline and sell out local venues including the Anaheim House of Blues. Amidst a busy touring schedule, the band found time to record a second album for Sub City in July of 2001, aptly titled "The Illusion of Safety," with well-known producer Brian McTernan (Hot Water Music, Cave In).
In their sophomore full-length all the hybrid-genre taglines go out the window. Melodic-hardcore, metal-core, power-pop, screamo, - leave those titles to the bands that fit them. With "The Illusion of Safety," Thrice has created a genre of their own. There are no clever labels to encapsulate it. All the earth-shaking beats, flaming guitar leads, driving bass lines and soaring vocals have been turned up several notches higher, but the main thing that sets this album apart is the soul. This is not a "1-2 F--- you" hardcore record, a cookie-cutter pop punk album, or an emotional sob story. This is an album diverse in its sonic and emotive qualities.
Lyrics that at first might seem too abstract to fully grasp will eventually hit you with a clarity that will not only leave you with chills, but encourage you to think outside of the box. Not only because of the deep, below-the-surface subject matter tackled -- mortality, morality, and attacks directed both at the outside world and the man in the mirror -- but also because the sincerity of the delivery recalls the memories of secrets long forgotten. The masterfully intricate, yet melodic guitar riffs draw you in and leave you wanting more. The cohesion of the driving beats and the deep, weaving bass lines literally raise the hairs on the back of your neck while your head bobs back and forth.
But still there's the soul . . . the indescribable feeling you get when you hear this record, and the almost physical presence of the intense effort that was poured into it.
With titles like "Kill me Quickly," "A Subtle Dagger" and "To Awake and Avenge the Dead," first glance might leave the listener with the impression that this is a downtrodden effort, but first glances are not what Thrice is about...
Look deeper, listen deeper, think deeper and realize that it's all just "the Illusion of Safety."
