Biography
Although Imogene’s sound could be described as groove-oriented hard (or alternative) rock, one may find it is not so easy to make comparisons to specific bands—past or present. Amidst the process of putting the band together, founder David Melbye has used descriptions such as “Pink Floyd meets Funkadelic” or, if one prefers contemporary references, this might be translated to “Radiohead meets Queens of the Stone Age.” Still, even these “marriage” characterizations are vague at best. Regardless, the band places a stronger emphasis on R&B-based rhythms than most contemporary “white rock” bands—and, at the same time, strives for sophisticated, emotionally driven vocal melodies. The music varies from a heavy, aggressive quality to a mellower, psychedelic-tinged flavor. Songs are typically concise and easily accessible—though often with an inclination toward a darker mood. The group began as a power trio, but has since added a keyboard player (Rhodes, Wurlitzer, etc.) to the line-up. The 4-piece performs its heavier electric material or, alternately, its mellower all-acoustic set—depending on the venue.
More on songwriter/producer David Melbye: material from an earlier project, Velvida (represented by 5 Alarm Music/Rescue Records), was recently picked up for use on “Queer Eye” as well as ABC’s “One Life to Live.” For Imogene, Melbye has culled the best songs from earlier projects to incorporate into the band’s current repertoire. One of these bands, Fuzz Beloved, made some noteworthy progress—having embarked on a summer tour of the U.S. as well as charting on CMJ. Co-producing/engineering with Melbye on Imogene’s debut full-length are: Tom Banghart(Fiona Apple), Rob Campanella(Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Tyde, Mia Doi Todd), and Justin Smith. Also invaluable to the project is USC Cinema doctoral candidate Andrew Syder who has directed and edited at least two of the band’s videos thus far.
David Melbye: vocals, guitar/bass.
Gabe Cohen: keyboards.
CJ Cevallos: bass.
Andy Campanella: drums and percussion.
