Biography
Phoenix J, a.k.a. Joan Martin, is Eurasian Fusion. Her songs and music blend an East-West upbringing with the jazzy tones of a Norah Jones, the soulfulness of an Annie Lennox, the cutting edge vibe of a chilled-out Bjork and the youthful air of a Sugarbabes.
Phoenix (a translation of her Chinese name "Hong") is a Singapore born, UK based performing singer-songwriter, keyboardist and arranger-programmer.
Her self-produced and released Asian Top 40 debut CD 'Binary Star' on Firebird Music was a blend of modern-traditional music, world-ethnic instrumentation and a variety of arrangements ranging from classical and ambient to dance trance to pop. Her second release "Junkk", also under Firebird, has been likened to that of Madonna and Bjork, but her influences are even more eclectic. "It takes the blend of Western pop, R&B dance and Asian influences she explored in Binary Star to another level. Lovers of alternative music, dance and even rock will also find plenty of tasty riffs and touches." (Zach Trax)
In live performances, Phoenix J has entranced capacity crowds from the UK Coventry Skydome Arena in a set supported by 50 dancers to a traditionally rock crowd at the world-renowned Whisky A Gogo on LA's Sunset Boulevard. She has a thrilling stage presence, complemented by spine-tingling and heartfelt vocals.
The winner of a Best Dance Award in a major US Music competition, Best Female Pop Artist in the Singapore National Arts Council Radio Jam Awards, and more recently voted a UK Top 10 on Freeserve's Wanadoo Discoveries, Phoenix has now joined forces with rising London-based band Greenhaus to become their lead vocalist/songwriter and front person. On the producer side, Phoenix J is especially thrilled to have been interviewed by Editor Paul White for Sound on Sound, one of UK's premier music creators magazines. A real compliment to the breadth of her musical abilities and talents.
