There is always an emphasis, from a marketing point of view, to convey the music on an album through the artwork, so that the purchaser can know roughly what to expect when buying an artist's releases. The Modern Age Slavery have got this one perfect, it is simply brutal, so much so that I can barely look at the mangled face on the cover, with all those instruments and hooks pulling at the blood splattered cadaver.
Damned To Blindness is 40 minutes of brutal metal, dancing in between death and grind and never really straying outside those two constraints. There is no relenting on Damned To Blindness, it is balls to the wall all the way through. Fast, dreary, punky but not quite, its organised punk. The Front could be the Arctic Monkeys, not a bad thing, not a bad thing at all, that is unless as a band you want to sound like yourselves.
Structured, resolved, understood, point taken. I know I will forget about 'Me and My God' when I wake up later. With a title like, 'Me And My God' I'd like to be able to hear the vocals clearly, so maybe they need to be a bit louder; never the less, I would dance to this track if I were out and about and it came on; like the tarantella, I would dance. There is no way out but to dance.
What I don't understand though is how you can be in a band and settle for sounding like other bands who have made it. I mean, its OK to have influences right? STOP! STOP! STOP! Now, Stop by The Medicine is catchy, familiar and I could easily live with it. I hated it when it started, don't ask me why. The lyrics are personal and real, and the more it goes on, the more it grows in every way. Whilst searching for this band on Myspace I found another band called, ' The Medicine' who were also pretty good I might add!
Coming back to "The Medicine" in question, it's quite obvious that there is no cure for what I have. I have ears that are too fussy, eyes that don't budge from their point of view and a sense of smell that constantly needs to be challenged and if it doesn't then it stops working!! If you claim to be the drug, then blow us away. "The Medicine" are in danger of being the poison if played on repeat. I don't know what it is about military drum fills and repetitive vocals, and the word 'nothing' that excites me?
Maybe because music making has become exactly that.
Another indie band singing something about a girl. In this case 'she's easy on the eye'. "Nothing No More" is a short song. A compact bit of sonic masturbation, but not too much. Yes I could imagine myself listening to this and it would sit nicely on the play list of commercial radio stations. Listening to another one of their songs 'Dynamite,' I found that The Wasp Factory have some quirky surprises up their sleeves. Coming from Grimsby and now Brighton, this alone for me is very promising. This combination of inspiration could be so powerful, and will [I suppose] one day reflect in The Wasp Factory's music, that />... | End of the Trail Records 
Upon listening to Shake! Appeal various familiar sounds are grouped, rounded, composed, re-arranged, and regurgitated once again blaring out of my speakers, and you bet ya, as usual, there is a Ska sounding song involved.
Now I'm not saying I'm not a fan of ska music. Oh no, it's just that to a point I am slightly sick of it. I have spent a lot of time gigging in the south of France and let me inform you there are as many Ska bands there as there are sausages in the summer time!
So, nothing lavish, unique, or daring here. Generally speaking it doesn't really stand out from the rest of the gazillion bands that exist in the world today. Shake! Appeal can play well and the single is well produced. They seem young, so there will be plenty of time for them to grow and start adding the />...  | One Little Indian Records - Out 24th Nov 
Kelli Ali hails from Birmingham for the uninitiated but to listen to this album you certainly won't be thinking of endless motorways, traffic jams, and Frank Skinner (sorry I need to brush up on my Birmingham knowledge) instead you'll be floated above the clouds to some-sort of fantasia where we are all at peace, we have no war, we have no poverty, we have no damn credit-crunch instead in it's place where we have genetically made unicorns and we all own one, everyday meals consist of candy-floss, and everyone has a smile like a frickin' rainbow (upside-down of course)... now maybe this isn't everybody's idea of happiness but listening to this album you'll be able to conjure up your own little idea of heaven this is the magic of 'Rocking Horse'.

In fact, it sounds like the result of an underground experiment like if The Cure had been fed into one end of that big arse Hadron Collider thing in tobleone land and in the other end we inserted Conor Oberst, ready 3-2-1 power on and smash we get Broken Records out the other end... now that's a worthwhile experiment never mind ears on mouses.
Edinburgh's Broken Records have been causing something of a little storm this year with a steady stream of delightful little releases that all have a yearning vocal placed over a twinkly sound scape.
